5 Questions To People Managers Desiring To Be Leaders

leadership-questionsI keep meeting and interacting with a lot of mid-level sales managers. While many of them call themselves a leader, sometime with more enthusiasm than the very word calls for, I can observe that they were mostly by-default managers, and least of all leadership as a concept is really clear to them. That said, the same is true for us all too. Just like love, leadership holds a different meaning for everyone. For some, it is a default role, for others it is a position of power; for many, it is a work level and designation and corner office or the offices next to the one in the corner and for a rare few, it means to serve.

I asked all my such people managers 5 simple questions:

“Why are you motivated to lead?”

No answer…

I ask the second one – “Why should anyone be led by you?” I explain this one; ”What is that you have that people who are as smart as you, as experiences as you and as successful as you; your very peers… why should they report to you?

No answer… some baffled faces…

I ask the third one – “If you were a product; what are the ingredients and contents of your leadership and what is the brand value you portray to your followers?” I go further on this one, “And how do you intend to strategically further this brand?”

No answer… even more puzzled looks…

“What do you want from your people?” I ask the next one.

To this one, answers come quick – they all want loyalty, integrity, performance, discipline, mannerisms, result-orientation, process-adherence, willingness to take feedback, et al

And then I ask, “What do you want for your people?”

Puzzled faces followed by few, unconvincing mumbles come back as a reply…

  1. Heres my miserable attempt to answer these thought provoking questions 😉

    1) Why are you motivated to lead?

    One wise man once told me there isn’t anything called as motivation….its a sham…its a trap…You need to be awakened from inside….shaken to make a difference once you find your purpose in life…

    If leading and guiding people is your passion…if you like being a guiding light to many who seek….leadership is for you…not just to help others but also to add to your personal growth during this journey

    2) Why should anyone be led by you?

    I don’t want to lead anyone….i want to walk by others seek to understand them, learn from them, give them newer perspectives and if they value what is being offered to them then we will flourish together and achieve a higher purpose…if not we will go our ways cherishing what ever growth we shared together

    3)What is it that you have that people who are as smart as you, as experienced as you, your very peers…why should they report to you?

    I will answer the second question first – The thing is no one reports to you..they may by the virtue of the corner office you occupy…but you ought to be a leader of choice…if they choose me every single time they are asked then i am their leader…

    What I have that others don’t – COURAGE, desire to learn – my cup is empty, personal power, compassion, patience, empathy, unconditional support till you realise your complete potential and feel like you are being true to yourself and not just doing a JOB

    4) If i were a product what are the ingredients and content of your leadership and what is the brand value you portray to your followers and how do you intend to strategically strengthen this brand?

    I don’t want to be a product…they don’t have ‘LIFE’ in them….i want to just ‘BE’ which a product cannot…My brand value – authenticity and integrity first – rest we will figure out 🙂

    You know in order to strengthen yourself as a brand strategy may not always work….sometimes you need to follow your gut and answer the question “What would you do if you weren’t afraid?” and as long as you have done justice to your inner calling….you will always keep gaining personal power and that my friend will move mountains…

    5) What do you want from people?

    In a professional give and take relationship – do justice to your presence first and then soar to your potential

    6)What do you want for your people?

    Thats the easiest question so far – Happiness
